One of Cabco’s customers’ top picks!
If you are looking for a family day near Newbury, then you can’t miss out on a visit to Highclere Castle. In fact, here at Cabco it is one of our most popular drop-off destinations, and for good reason. The real life Downton Abbey promises fascinating exhibitions, beautiful grounds and an epic history! Here are 3 reasons to make Highclere Castle your next day out!
1. The history of Highclere Castle is much bigger than you think!
Highclere Castle has a long and vibrant history, dating back to the ninth century. Originally a medieval palace, it underwent several transformations over the centuries before being redesigned in the 1800s by Sir Charles Barry (the same architect that designed the Houses of Parliament no less). Its Gothic Revival style wows visitors with opulent interiors and grandeur fit for royalty (literally!). The castle has a long line of famous residents, notably the Carnavon family. George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon famously discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, which you hear all about during your visit to Highclere Castle as an exhibition telling the story still remains in the castle’s cellar. The castle also has links to both World Wars, with a hospital for the war wounded opening during World War I and Lady Carnarvon herself assisting as a nurse. During World War II the castle housed evacuee children from London.
2. Downton Abbey comes to life at Highclere Castle
You probably already knew that Highclere Castle is the principal filming location for the acclaimed TV show “Downton Abbey”. But did you know that the interiors are kept the same as they were for filming? Meaning stepping foot inside the castle is like stepping onto the set! The castle encourages visitors to embrace the connection to the much loved series and “walk down the grand old staircase like Lady Mary did on her wedding day, sit at Jackdaws Castle where Lady Edith so often found herself and take in the state dining room where many of the Dowager Countess’ wonderfully acerbic lines were delivered by Dame Maggie Smith.” You can discover more about the castle’s connection to the Crawley’s home at their website: highclerecastle.co.uk/downton-abbey
3. Explore grounds of Highclere with 8 different walks
Highclere Castle boasts breathtaking grounds that offer a relaxing stroll through beautiful gardens, farmland and more! With a pdf (highclerecastle.co.uk/pdfs/where-can-i-walk.pdf) detailing each of the iconic 8 walks, you’ll be spoilt for choice on which route to take. Each walk takes you through stunning countryside and offers you a unique view of the Castle. Depending which path you choose, you’ll pass Victorian chapels, temples, lakes, medieval barns, a whole lot of sheep and so much more!
With guided tours, special events, and seasonal attractions there is so much to be enjoyed during your visit! We recommend that you take a look at what’s on at Highclere Castle (highclerecastle.co.uk/whats-on) before booking and time your visit with an event!
